Marie, 7, draws water from a standpipe built with the support of UNICEF in the Buhene district of Goma, capital of North Kivu province, to the east. of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The district of Buhene, located on the northern outskirts of the city, was the most affected by the volcanic eruption of May 22, 2021; almost half of the neighborhood was destroyed by the lava flow, and the water supply network was damaged. The lava flow affected the only water reservoir in the area, as well as the inlet and outlet pipes, causing the drinking water supply to be cut off for standpipes installed in the northern part of the city. To remedy this, UNICEF financed and supervised the rehabilitation of the power supply network and the construction of 10 standpipes managed by Regideso.
